Martin Luther The Babylonian Captivity of the Church

Martin Luther First Principles of the Reformation (95 Theses and Other Works)

In 1517, Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church, and ultimately altered the course of European history, when he nailed his «95 Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences» on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. At the time, Renaissance humanists were beginning to oppose the reign of the Church and the wealth it accrued from taxes and the sale of Indulgences to the people. A monk and a scholar, Luther intended to promote independent thinking with the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He wanted people to read the words and understand God in terms of their own experience. Unsurprisingly, he was ordered by the pope to print a retraction, which he refused; he was ultimately excommunicated, and his action prompted the Protestant Reformation. This edition contains Martin Luther's «95 Theses», as well as the three other primary works of Martin Luther: «To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Respecting the Reformation of the Christian Estate», «Concerning Christian Liberty», and «On the Babylonish Captivity of the Church».

Collected together in this volume are the following three works by Martin Luther: «The Ninety-Five Theses», «On Christian Liberty», and «Address to the Christian Nobility». Martin Luther, the founder of the Protestant movement and one of the most important figures in all of religious history puts forth his objections to the Catholic Church in these classic religious texts. «The Ninety-Five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences» is Martin Luther's list of concerns on corruption in the Roman Catholic Church. This 1517 document has since been widely acknowledged as the catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. «On Christian Liberty» is Luther's third major treatise in which he details his doctrines on justification by faith and the priesthood of all believers, and eventually expands on the concept of freedom through grace and its meaning for mankind. Finally in this work we find the «Address to the Christian Nobility» which predates «On Christian Liberty» and further discusses the religious beliefs of Martin Luther. This collection of foundational works of the Protestant movement is essential reading for religious scholars and laymen alike.

Todd Hobart Martin Luther as Youth Worker

Martin Luther is one of the most studied theologians in the history of the Christian church, so it is difficult to find areas that have been neglected when it comes to this great reformer. However, Luther's work with children and youth gets short shrift when compared to many other achievements. Martin Luther as a Youth Worker considers the reformer from this little-studied aspect of his work. Luther's practical care for children and youth, his educational reforms, his work in faith formation, and his view of human reason are considered. Last, the question is asked what it means to be a reformer with children and youth today. How can we live into Luther's reforming spirit in a way that addresses the needs of our current context?

William M. Marsh Martin Luther on Reading the Bible as Christian Scripture

Above all else that the sixteenth-century German Reformer was known for, Martin Luther was a Doctor of the Holy Scriptures. One of the most characteristic features of Luther's approach to Scripture was his resolved christological interpretation of the Bible. Many of the Reformer's interpreters have looked back upon Luther's «Christ-centered» exposition of the Scriptures with sentimentality but have often labeled it as «Christianization,» particularly in regards to Luther's approach of the Old Testament, dismissing his relevance for today's faithful readers of God's Word. This study revisits this assessment of Luther's christological interpretation of Scripture by way of critical analysis of the Reformer's «prefaces to the Bible» that he wrote for his translation of the Scriptures into the German vernacular. This work contends that Luther foremost believes Jesus Christ to be the sensus literalis of Scripture on the basis of the Bible's messianic promise, not enforcing a dogmatic principle onto the scriptural text and its biblical authors that would be otherwise foreign to them. This study asserts that Luther's exegesis of the Bible's «letter» (i.e., his engagement with the biblical text) is primarily responsible for his conviction that Christ is Holy Scripture's literal sense.

Martin Luther Selections from the Table Talk of Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483-1546) is a name that is synonymous with reformation. His 1517 posting of ninety-five theses on the door of All Saints church in Wittenburg changed the course of history forever. In his theses, Luther objects to the Roman Catholic Church and its practice of selling indulgences, as well as the idea that money could buy one's way to salvation. His controversial ideas inspired the Reformation and influenced the Lutheran and Protestant ideologies. Most of Luther's books were ordered to be burned, however, a copy of his «Table Talk» (originally titled «Divine Discourses») was found under the foundation of a German home in 1626. It contains a series of informal conversations recorded by Luther's students and colleagues in his home, and illustrates the reformist's firm beliefs on religious doctrine, history, academics and history, to name a few. These selections expound some of Martin Luther's most profound ideas, completely uncensored.

The Reformer Martin Luther is the source of endless fascination and dispute. Not only his antagonists but also his supporters have created a host of representations of his thought. On the one hand, Catholic and other similar voices have accused Luther of being the major agent in the birth of modern secularism. On the other hand, Lutherans themselves are divided on the meaning of Reformation. In view of all these interpretations and dismissals of Luther and the Lutheran Reformation, it requires a certain boldness to claim that Luther's theology is intellectually fascinating and contains exceptional resources. This is precisely what the present volume claims. The studies collected in this volume aim at showing in which sense Luther remains a fully Catholic and genuinely Augustinian theologian who is not so much a forerunner of problematic modernity as a representative of classical Christianity. At the same time, Luther's theology contains ideas that can be made fruitful in dialogue with currents like communitarianism or Radical Orthodoxy. The volume consists of articles written by scholars affiliated with the project known as «the New Finnish Interpretation of Luther.» The topics include Luther's theological anthropology, Trinity, christology, sacraments, faith, theology of the cross, the Virgin Mary, sexuality, music, and the spiritual reading of the Holy Scriptures.

Martin Luther The Epistles of St. Peter and St. Jude Preached and Explained

Martin Luther Commentary on Galatians

St. Paul’s “Epistle to the Galatians” is one of the most important of all Christian writings. The work was treasured by Martin Luther, the 15th century German priest, scholar, and father of the Protestant Reformation. For this reason, Luther delivered lectures on the “Epistle to the Galatians” in 1531 and published those lectures in 1535. The resulting “Commentary on Galatians” by Luther is widely regarded as one of the most important commentaries ever written on Christian faith and love. Deeply personal and at least in part autobiographical, Luther explains why St. Paul’s “Epistle to the Galatians” is so important and meaningful to both him and to the Christian faith. Paul’s “Epistle” and Luther’s “Commentary” have assured countless Christians of the superiority of the Bible over human reason, the perfection of Christ’s sacrifice and atonement through his death, and the essential doctrine of justification through faith alone as the foundation for all Christians. Moving and passionate, Luther expresses the strength and comfort that he has found in this faith. This masterpiece continues to remain as inspiring and important to Christians today in understanding their faith as it has been for the last five hundred years. Presented here is the condensed translation by Theodore Graebner. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Richard S. Harvey Luther and the Jews

Luther and the Jews: Putting Right the Lies is a timely and important contribution to the debate about the legacy of the Protestant Reformation. It brings together two topics that sit uncomfortably: the life, ministry, and impact of Martin Luther, and the history of Jewish-Christian relations to which he made a profoundly negative contribution. As a Messianic Jew, Richard Harvey considers Luther and his legacy today, and explains how Messianic Jews have a vital role to play in the much-needed reconciliation not only between Protestants and Catholics, but also between Christians and Jews, in order for Luther's vision of the renewal and restoration of the church to be realized.
