Moses N. Ikiugu Meaningful Living Across the Lifespan

‘Meaningful Living across the Lifespan is an important book for the 21st Century.Educators, students and the general public will find much to ponder in the discussions of Victor Frankl and other ideas about meaning and how meaning is connected with occupation broadly defined as all human activity. Whereas the first parts of this book are theoretical, the final parts offer a detailed guide for practical action targeted to occupational therapists and occupational scientists. This is an important textbook for those who are concerned with occupation-based practice.’ Elizabeth Townsend, PhD, Professor Emerita, Dalhousie University Canada
‘This book by the brilliant team of Ikiugu and Pollard takes an occupational lens to the problem of how human beings achieve meaningful lives, given the challenges they face as individuals and in communities over time. A magisterial rethinking in occupational terms of social science and behavioral science, politics and the humanities, Meaningful Living across the Lifespan is a coming of age story for occupational therapy and occupational science. This is a book to help the world’s 350,000 occupational therapists—and generations of students—to expand and justify practice for more humane and sustainable lifestyles for all people and their cultures.’ Gelya Frank, Ph.D., Professor, Mrs. T. H. Chan Division of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy, University of Southern California
Occupational therapy and occupational science are based on the basic idea that participation in meaningful occupations is essential for health and a sense of well-being.However, there is no agreement regarding what constitutes meaningful occupation, or exactly how participation in meaningful occupation works to produce good health and a sense of well-being. In this book we attempt to bridge the gap between the postulation that meaningful occupations are related to health and a sense of well-being, and an understanding of how people use meaningful occupations to create and to discover meaning in their lives. Key topics in the book are:
· An understanding of meaningfulness from multiple perspectives
· Exploration of how people search for meaning throughout their lives using the analogy o fthe quest for meaning as a life-long journey
· Examination of how occupations are used to help people create and discover meaning at different stages in this life-long journey
· Illustration of a step-by-step application of a theoretical conceptual practice model that can be used to guide people in examining their lives and using occupations to optimize meaning in their lives
· Some thoughts about how occupational therapists/scientists can use occupation-based interventions not only to help people optimize meaning in their lives, but also to address the outstanding global problems of our times
This book is an important resource for occupational therapists and scientists who really want to understand meaningful occupations both conceptually and operationally.
This book is the first in the new series Critical Studies in Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science

Barbara Johnson Moses and Multiculturalism

Countering impressions of Moses reinforced by Sigmund Freud in his epoch-making <i>Moses and Monotheism</i>, this concise, engaging work begins with the perception that the story of Moses is at once the most nationalist and the most multicultural of all foundation narratives. Weaving together various texts—biblical passages, philosophy, poems, novels, opera, and movies—Barbara Johnson explores how the story of Moses has been appropriated, reimagined, and transmitted across cultures and historical moments. But she finds that already in the Bible, the story of Moses is a multicultural story, the story of someone who functions well in a world to which he, unbeknownst to the casual observer, does not belong. Using the Moses story as a lens through which to view questions at the heart of contemporary literary, philosophical, and ethical debates, Johnson shows how, through a close analysis of this figure's recurrence through time, we might understand something of the paradoxes, if not the impasses of contemporary multiculturalism.

Paul J. N. Lawrence The Books of Moses Revisited

Who wrote the first five books of the Bible? Does it really matter who did? The Books of Moses Revisited explores this question by comparing the covenants of Exodus/Leviticus and Deuteronomy with the inter-state treaties of the late second millennium BC. Some compelling similarities come to light, both in the pattern adopted and in many small details. Lawrence clearly demonstrates this with many examples and diagrams, yet without assuming that readers possess a detailed knowledge of ancient history and linguistics. Despite the entrenchment of the widely held theory–the so-called Documentary Hypothesis–that the first five books of the Bible were the product of an anonymous editor living many centuries after Moses, this book argues that the first five books of the Bible bear many hallmarks of being late second millennium BC compositions and that Moses should not be ruled out as being the author. The book also explores how several ancient texts–the Egyptian Story of Sinuhe, the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, and Homer's Iliad and Odyssey–were transmitted in antiquity and suggests that a similar process also lies behind the transmission of the first five books of the Bible.

Aryeh Wineman The Hasidic Moses

In The Hasidic Moses, Aryeh Wineman invites readers to join him on a journey through various eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Hasidic texts that interpret the life of Moses. Such texts read their own accent on spirituality and innerness along with their conceptions of community and spiritual leadership into the biblical account of Moses. Wineman reveals the ways in which historical Hasidic voices interpreted both the Exodus from Egypt and the scene of Revelation at Sinai as statements concerning what occurs constantly in our lives at all times. In addition, Wineman shows how Hasidic readers embraced the idea that Moses had to die in order that his soul might return to the world in the righteous and holy ones of every generation, and that the presence of Moses actually transcends time and is present in spiritual understanding as it unfolds at any moment in any period.

Jack R. Lundbom Deuteronomy

This book on Deuteronomy seeks to place before a broad audience of students and lay readers one of the important books among the first five books (together called the Pentateuch) in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. It lifts up major themes in the book, one of the most prominent being Moses as prophet par excellence. Deuteronomy is the Old Testament's major book on law and covenant, re-presenting the Ten Commandments given to Israel at Mount Horeb (also known as Sinai). But the book is more concerned to present the Deuteronomic Code (in chapters 12-26) taught to Israel in the plains of Moab, just before Moses dies and Israel is to cross the Jordan River into Canaan. The writer of Deuteronomy is not Moses, as stated in the Jewish Talmud, but most likely a Levitical priest in the late eighth or early seventh century BC who assumes the persona of Moses in Judahite worship. Two old poems, the Song of Moses (32:1-43) and the Blessing of Moses (chapter 33), appear in a final supplement to the book, which then closes with an account of Moses's death and burial in Moab.

Maurice D. Harris Moses

In Moses: A Stranger among Us, Rabbi Maurice Harris leads us to look beyond familiar and popular portrayals of Moses so that we can discover the Moses whose lesser-known attributes and experiences provide us with surprisingly fresh ethical and spiritual guidance. Harris offers many angles on his subject, interweaving traditional religious interpretations, academic Bible scholarship, psychological and sociological analysis, feminist readings, and more. Combining deep respect for the biblical text with a willingness to question received tradition, Harris reveals a complex Moses whose life story gives us important tools for better understanding issues like religious fundamentalism, intermarriage, identity confusion, civil disobedience, gay and lesbian equality, and the nature of sacred mythic storytelling. Written in a refreshing, plainspoken voice for people of all faiths or none, the result is a volume of creative, thought-provoking, and exciting readings of the Bible.

In this book, Ikiugu and Pollard explore the notion of meaningfulness, in the light of Viktor Frankl's (1992) assertions that the will to meaning is the primary motivation for behavior in human existence, and that the frustration of the pursuit for meaning in the modern and Western world constituted what he termed 'existential vacuum', leading in turn to what he called 'noogenic neurosis' or 'the disease of meaninglessness'

William Heath The Children Bob Moses Led

Winner of the Hackney Literary Award and selected in 2002 by Time as one of the eleven best novels on the African American experience, The Children Bob Moses Led is a compelling, powerful chronicle of the events of Freedom Summer. The novel is narrated in alternating sections by Tom Morton, a white college student who joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for the summer, and Bob Moses, the charismatic leader of the Mississippi Summer Project. With clarity and honesty, Heath’s novel recalls the bittersweet spirit of the 1960s and conveys the hopeful idealism of the young students as they begin to understand both the harsh reality faced by those they try to help and the enormity of the oppression they must overcome.
